John joined Automotive and Technical Personnel
following a long career in the motor industry and more recently,
the HR industry.
John's motor industry experience spans 30 years in the New Zealand
Motor Industry when as an advertising account executive he picked
up the account of the fledgling Nissan franchise. Within a few months
of doing so he was invited to join Nissan and progressed over the
following twelve years, initially as Sales Manager and moving to
General Manager, Sales and Marketing. These were years of very rapid
expansion and the demands of the position were both considerable
and diverse.
A few examples of the projects undertaken by John during this time;
constantly expand, monitor and refine dealer networks, introduce
Nissan diesel trucks to NZ, plan and manage commissioning of truck
assembly plant, introduce Nissan marine engines, structure and
introduce "Valid Value" NZ's first used car warranty, set up subsidiary
company ADI Ltd. [importation and distribution "Echo" chainsaws
and related equipment.] Not the least of achievements in this period
was the increase of annual sales volume from 300
units to 6500 units.
With a preference for the culture of a smaller company and with
some Nissan participation John secured the NZ franchise for Renault,
setting up the distribution company Eurotrans Motors. Again, responsibilities
demanded the structuring [from zero] of the distribution company
and a dealer network whilst other challenges included, negotiation
of import licences with success experienced in the then "like
for like" programme [ license earned for the export of automotive
products eg seat covers, logging trailers, fire trucks.] Establish
Reo Motors, Renault franchisee Greenlane, set up NZ's first national
pre delivery center whilst moving Renault to best selling European
for two years on the trot. During this time the sinking of the
Rainbow
Warrior proved somewhat counter productive to commercial ambitions.
The success of Renault
was not unnoticed by Peugeot who approached John in 1988 with
the request to handle their product
in NZ. This John did setting up Orly Motor Distributors for whom
he was Managing Director. Many of the challenges confronting
Orly
paralleled the challenges of Eurotrans and in fact, Nissan. Peugeot
became NZ's best selling European marque for three consecutive
years,
the 405 won every NZ car of the year award and John beat Eric Peugeot
3 & 2 on Wairakei International.
In the mid 90's John reduced his association with the Motor Trade
whilst retaining an interest in two private companies which included
a small HR consultancy, it was this interest which resulted in John
forming an association with Automotive and Technical Personnel.
During his time in the automotive industry John was -
Chairman; Associated Motor Vehicle Importers of NZ
Chairman; France New Zealand Trade Association
Chairman; Dromdale Rose Society
